Automotive Master Technician Certificate of Achievement



Upon successful completion of the Automotive Master Technician certificate, the student demonstrates knowledge of the skills necessary to diagnose, service, and perform repairs on cars, SUVs, and light duty trucks.

The student demonstrates competence in the following areas: engine repair, automatic transmission/transaxle, manual drive train and axles, suspension and steering, brakes, electrical/electronic systems, heating and air conditioning, and engine performance. The student can take the eight Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) exams in the mentioned areas. The student can pursue career opportunities at dealerships, independent repair shops, smog shops, specialization shops, and public agencies.

This automotive training program is accredited by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) in association with the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). This program is also certified by the California Department of Consumer Affairs/Bureau of Automotive Repair (DCA/BAR). The student can receive Level I and Level II certification to obtain the California Smog Check Inspector and Smog Check Repair Technician licenses and the Brake and Headlamp Adjusters license through the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR). The student can also obtain the Mobile Air Conditioning Society (MACS) certificate in automotive air conditioning.

Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will have knowledge and skills to prepare for state and national certifications; from the California Bureau of Automotive Repair Clean Air Car Course, Brake and Lamp licensure, the federal Environmental Protection Agency for protecting the environment while repairing air conditioning systems, and from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, indicating automotive technician competency. This will be assessed through the successful completion of the related courses mapped to this outcome.
  2. Students demonstrate technical competence in automotive repair by successfully completing a National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation certified course of training within the eight specific related areas.
  3. Students will demonstrate repair order writing skills to meet Department of Consumer Affairs/Bureau of Automotive Repair requirements. This will be assessed through successful completion of repair order writing as evidenced using a rubric to evaluate the effectiveness of the repair order document.
  4. Students demonstrate skills necessary to work as a fully trained automotive technician in all eight “ASE” areas: engine repair, automatic transmissions/transaxles, manual drive trains/axles, suspension and steering, brakes, electrical/electronics, engine performance, air conditioning advanced engine performance. This will be assessed through the successful completion of the courses mapped to this outcome.
