Athletics - Intercollegiate

San Joaquin Delta College participates in 20 intercollegiate sports, 10 women’s teams and 10 men’s teams. Delta College maintains a program that adheres to institutional, California Community College Athletic Association and Conference policies, and operates in an efficient and effective manner. It is the goal of the Department of Athletics to provide an environment that encourages academic and competitive success. Athletics at Delta College enhances college life, contributes to the retention of our students, and fosters pride in the college and community relations. It also successfully encourages the transfer of our athletes to four-year colleges and universities. Baseball

The Mustangs compete in the Big 8 conference, which is arguably the best in California. Six teams in the conference have recently won a State Championship. With a FieldTurf synthetic surface, 300 stadium seats, 80’ dugouts, and full plyo wall, Nick Cecchetti Field is among the finest facilities in junior college baseball. Since 2008, the San Joaquin Delta College baseball program has established itself as one of the best junior college programs in the nation. It currently has produced the most NCAA Division Players of any JC in the country. Delta has been to seven of the last eleven California Community College Final Fours. The trips included two State Championships in 2011 and 2018 and three State Runner Up finishes in 2009, 2014 and 2015. Delta has been in the Perfect Game National Rankings eight times, produced 30 professional players, and over 100 NCAA division 1 transfers, and 16 All Americans. Head Coach, Reed Peters, has been recognized as the Junior College National Coach of the Year in 2018, and Regional Coach of the Year three times.

Basketball (Men)

Men’s basketball has made eleven appearances in the Sweet 16, four appearances in the Elite Eight, two in the Final Four, and earned nine conference championships over the past 20+ seasons. More importantly, well over 150 players have come through the program. Players have earned scholarships and transferred to four-year institutions with many going to NCAA Division I colleges and universities, including Washington State University, University of Oklahoma, Gonzaga University, Drake University, Idaho State University, Oregon State University, University of the Pacific, UC-Davis, UC-Santa Barbara, San Jose State University, and CSU-Sacramento.

Basketball (Women)

The Lady Mustangs have been a program to contend with since their Bay Valley Conference Title in 1997. The Delta College women’s basketball team has been conference champions for thirteen of the past twenty-one seasons and have advanced to the California state Elite Eight Tournament twelve times in the past 21 years. In 2006, 2009 and 2022, they were state runner-up and in 2014, 2015, 2019, and 2022 they made the Final Four in California. The 2020 team finished with the best record in program history (29-1), won the Big 8 Championship and finished the season as the #1 ranked team in California before Covid-19 shut down the State Tournament. In 2022 the Mustangs were Big 8 Champions once again, finished with a 33-3 record, and advanced to the State Championship Game. The most important statistic is the 97% graduation rate since 1997. Participants in this elite program improve skills academically and athletically and have the opportunity to earn scholarships. Over 90 athletes have earned basketball scholarships and transferred to a four-year university to continue their playing careers.

Beach Volleyball (Women)

Building off the strength of their indoor volleyball program, Delta College began competing in beach volleyball in the spring 2018. This gives the college’s volleyball student-athletes an opportunity to compete in both semesters. Head Coach Molly Hummel has helped get the program off to a solid start. In 2019 the team had their first doubles team qualify for the State Tournament.

Cross Country (Men and Women)

Cross Country has experienced a growth spurt at Delta College in recent years. The number of participants involved in the program is on the rise and successes are mounting. The student athletes participating are experiencing quality personal achievements in their races and in the classroom. In the 2010 fall season, our men’s team qualified for the state meet for the first time in ten years and have qualified individuals to state every year thereafter. In 2013, 2015, 2019 and 2022. In 2021 the women’s teams qualified for the state meet finishing 12th. In the same year, the women captured the Big 8 championship team title for the first time in 20 years. Both men and women had individual Big 8 champions as well. The coaching staff and the athletes are very excited about their recent victories and look forward to more of the same in the upcoming seasons. 

Football

Gary Barlow continues at the helm of Delta College Mustang football. Since assuming the reins as Head Coach in 2001, Coach Barlow has led the team to multiple conference championships, bowl appearances and bowl championships. The Mustangs were 2001 Shrine Bowl Champions, 2004 Holiday Bowl Champions, 2008 Hawaiian Punch Bowl Champions, 2011 Togo’s Bowl Champion, 2012 Silicon Valley Bowl Champions, and in 2015 they were the Gridiron Classic Bowl Champions. Mustang football student-athletes continue to earn and accept full ride scholarships to major universities each year.

Golf (Men and Women)

Tony Troncale has been the Head Coach for the Men’s and Women’s Golf Teams since 2008 at Delta college. In fact, he is the first and only coach for the Women’s golf program. Both teams have had great success by continuously advancing to state championships. The teams benefit from the guidance Tony provides as a PGA Professional and several players from both the men’s and women’s golf teams have transferred to four-year schools continuing their golfing career. Delta College men’s golf teams have gone on to be league champions in many seasons. In 2012 the women’s team advanced to the State Championship and one of the players set a Northern California Regional playoff record. In 2013, the women’s team had its first all-state player and several players advancing individually to the State Championship. In 2019 and 2021, the women’s team finished 8th at the State Championships. Delta College looks forward to the continued growth of men’s and women’s golf. 

Soccer (Men)

The start of 2023 marks Joshua Bradley’s 10th season as head coach of Delta College men’s soccer. In 2019 the team was ranked 5th in the state and 12th in the nation, competing in NorCal Regional Final. The 2018 season was again one for the record books. ranked 8th in the state, boasting a final record of 14-3-4, and finished in the top 20 in the nation. In 2017 the team finished with one of their best records since 1999 and their first playoff appearance in 18 years. The program continues to grow and compete on the national level and looks forward to seeing what the recruiting class of 2023 will bring to the field. The Delta region has a wealth of players feeding into the college’s soccer program. Many players have gone on to play at the Division I, II, and III levels, with several going on to compete at the professional level. Delta’s soccer program unites a diverse population of players with varying skills and backgrounds to compete each season. The team is a powerful soccer program in the Big 8 Conference, winning their first ever conference championship in 2018.

Soccer (Women)

Adrienne Sorenson recently completed her 13th season as Head Coach of the women’s soccer team. In fall of 2021, the program won their second consecutive Big 8 Conference Championship title and set the program record for winning percentage (.955%) with a 20-0-2 overall final record along with the program record for goals scored in a season (100). During the 2018, 2019 and 2022 seasons, the team finished in the Final Four in the CCCAA State Championships. In 2019, the team set numerous program bests including most wins (23) and a 7th place ranking in the final National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll. The area is rich in soccer talent and Coach Sorenson has built strong partnerships with coaches and programs in the greater central valley to build a powerful soccer program. Delta is the only California community college to appear in the top 10 United Soccer Coaches Association final national ranking in the last four consecutive seasons. Since Sorenson took over the program in fall of 2010, the team has qualified for the post-season every season from 2011 to the present. In fall 2016, the program opened a state-of-the-art soccer only turf complex, and from that season forward has gone deep into the post season with four State Elite 8 appearances, back-to-back Final 4 appearances, and back-to-back Big 8 Conference Championship titles, including winning the first inaugural Big 8 Conference tournament in 2021. Many of the women have received athletic scholarships to play at Division I and Division II schools, including Fresno State University, San Diego State University, New Mexico State University, Cal State Stanislaus, San Francisco State, and many others. The student-athletes leave Delta College with an appreciation for the blend of athletics and academics required to be successful.

Softball

In 2019, Delta won the Big 8 Championship and finished 4th in the state. The 2017 Delta Squad won the Big 8 Championship, was ranked as high as #2 in the State, and competed in the CCCAA State Championship final four. In addition, Head Coach Jim Fisher was selected as the CCCAA Softball Coach of the Year in Northern California. The team again qualified for the CCCAA State Championships in 2018 and finished 7th in the State. In the past fifteen seasons, the Lady Mustangs have won conference championships three times, competed in the state tournament five times, earning 2nd and two 4th 5th and 7th place finishes. Several players have earned All-American and All-State honors. With an area rich in softball talent, Delta College continues to produce quality softball teams and sends numerous players on to four-year institutions to complete their academic and athletic careers. In 2011, the team finished as the state runners-up and in 2014, 2015, 2017, and 2018 they finished in the Elite Eight of the state championships.

Swimming/Diving (Men and Women)

Michael Maroney has been at the helm of Delta’s men’s and women’s swim team since 2008. During his tenure, Delta has continued the school’s storied history of producing some of the finest swimmers in the State. On Maroney’s watch, Delta has produced 10 State Champions, three state meet high-point award winners, 22 Big 8 Champions, and one national record. Maroney is a seven time All-American in swimming and water polo and has held the sprint freestyle school records at all schools he attended. In 1992, Maroney became the first swimmer in University of the Pacific’s history to break the 20 second mark in the 50 Free. He was also honored with All-Big West Conference Teams in both sports, and captain of the 1992 water polo & 1993 swim teams at University of the Pacific. Michael is married to Stockton-native Sherrie Hammer, and father to his step-son Robert Patrick III, and his three sons; Tyler, Connor, Clay who each have played and swam at Delta College for their dad.

Starting in 2023 Maroney is joined by Women’s Head Swim Coach Nathan Varosh and assistant Taitum Ciesla. Varosh has been head Women’s Water Polo Coach since 2011 and is bringing the winning culture he has curated over a decade to the Women’s Swim Program. Varosh has been an assistant swim coach in the program since 2011. Varosh has produced 27 Water Polo All-Americans in his tenure and looks to continue that trend to the Women’s Swim Program. Varosh swam and attended Delta College in 2000 and 2001 before perusing his coaching career in swimming and water polo.

Robert Wimberley rounds out the amazing Delta Aquatics Staff as Head Diving Coach. Wimberley won State Dive Coach of the year honors and most recently produced two-time Big 8 and Nor Cal Men’s Champion Tony Ortega in 2021-23.

The group is dedicated to creating a spirit of competition and pushing the Delta athletes to meet their potential.

Track and Field (Men and Women)

The incredible tradition of track and field that began with the coaching of Merv Smith and Raydell Barkley at Delta College continues. During their eras, they turned out numerous track and field athletes many of whom are now coaches. In recent years, Delta College has regained its prominence in Northern California. In the 2014 season, the women’s team was Big 8 champions and both men’s and women’s teams finished eighth in the State. The men’s team finished in the top ten in the state in both 2017 and 2018. In the 2021 season, the teams had multiple top ranked athletes and a few who are on track to have record breaking seasons. Under Head Coach Lauryn Seales and Les Anthony II, the programs are growing and thriving. 

Volleyball (Women)

The women’s volleyball team has been a perennial powerhouse in California for the past 31 years and has recorded an 80% won/loss record. During that time, they recorded first place finishes in their conference 20 times, second place seven times, and third place seven times. They have participated in the prestigious California State Championships on 21 occasions. The team had a tremendous season in 2017, finishing 2nd in the CCCAA State Championships. Under Head Coach Molly Hummel (2015, 2016 and 2017 Big 8 Coach of the Year), the program continues to flourish. As a  result of participating in the volleyball program at Delta College, many players have gone on to compete at the Division I, II, and III levels including at the University of the Pacific, CSU Long Beach, CSU Fresno, University of Oregon, UNLV, Cal-Poly SLO, University of Pittsburgh, CSU East Bay, CSU Stanislaus, Weber State University, St. Mary’s College, University of Wyoming, CSU-Fullerton, San Jose State University, Fordham University, and East Tennessee State University just to name a few. Participation in the program is highly competitive.  

Water Polo (Men)

Delta men’s water polo has one of the richest histories in Northern California. The program has produced three USA Water Polo Hall of Famers and countless team titles and championships. Since Michael Maroney took over the program in the fall of 2009, he has produced four Big 8 Conference titles (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016), and four Big 8 MVP’s. During the five-year span between 2013-2017, Delta teams were ranked in the State final top 4 ranking three times and were never ranked lower than 8th. Maroney has a collegiate coaching record of 402-338 over 19 seasons. He founded three different college teams: University of the Pacific (Women) 1993, Texas A&M – Corpus Christi (Men-club) 1996, and Hartwick College (Women) 1999. He also coached at the California Maritime Academy, and the UOP men’s team from 2003-2007 before taking over for the Mustangs. Maroney is one of the few coaches to win the USA Water Polo Coach of the Year awards in three different zones: Southwest Zone (‘98,’99), Northeast Zone (‘02), and California Central Valley (‘05). He has also been named Coach of the Year by the College Water Polo Association (2000, 2001, 2002), the East Coast Athletic Association (2002), and Big 8 Conference (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016). From 1997-1999 Maroney was on the USA National Junior Team coaching staff and traveled international for trainings and competitions during that span.  

Water Polo (Women)

Delta women’s water polo team has become a perennial contender for the CCCAA State Championship and a household name in Collegiate Women’s Water Polo. The team advanced to the CCCAA Final Four six of the last seven seasons, putting the stamp on the team’s culture and core values that drive athletic success. The team continues to strive into dominance not only in the pool but in the classroom and beyond Delta College. Over 90% of Delta Women Water Polo Players transfer to a four-year institution and continue their playing careers while competing for their future with hard earned academics. Since 2015, 56 Lady Mustangs have moved on to play at NCAA Water Polo at institutions including CSU East Bay, Sonoma State, CSU Long Beach, UC Davis, CSU Monterey Bay, Wagner College, Chapman University, Cal Lutheran, San Diego State and more. This program is rooted in history, culture, and the desire to become the best people we can be every chance they get to work at it.

Wrestling

AFFIRM

AFFIRM is a program designed to increase the retention and transfer rate for students of African descent, as well as other students of diverse ancestries to four-year colleges and universities. Emphasis is placed on the General Educational Curriculum: History, English, Science, Language, Visual and Performing Arts, and core discipline requirements. By using the Student Success and Support Program services, students will have access to counseling services, orientation, assessment, advising and other educational planning. The AFFIRM program seeks to educate our students by intentional and direct scholastic programming. In addition, the program exposes our scholars to educational events and university programs, including cultural events, leadership opportunities, and more. An essential component to the success of the AFFIRM Program is the collaboration between students, parents, and community members, as well as the dedicated faculty and staff of San Joaquin Delta Community College.

Eligibility Criteria:

• Be a full-time student
• Maintain a 2.0 GPA and be in good standing with the college
• Complete an application and contract for the AFFIRM program
• Attend an interview/program orientation session
• Be planning to transfer to a four-year university
• Meet with a counselor and complete a Student Educational Plan
• Participate in scheduled AFFIRM activities
• Participate in Study Hall activities

CalWORKs Assessment

The CalWORKs Assessment Center provides assessment services required by the San Joaquin County Human Services Agency (HSA) for individuals enrolled in the county CalWORKs program. Services are available by appointment only through referral from HSA or its contract agencies.

The CalWORKs Program at Delta College provides services to students receiving cash assistance from the Human Services Agency (HSA). Its purpose is to support student-parents in progressing toward their county-approved plan while ensuring their success in achieving their educational and career goals. While the program works closely with its HSA partners, it is composed of Delta employees and is funded by the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office.

Disability Support Programs and Services (DSPS)

Disability Support Programs and Services (DSPS) offers specialized services that increase access to academic programs and services for individuals with verified disabilities. Academic adjustments and auxiliary aides (accommodations) are based on individual functional and/or educational limitations as supported by documentation from an appropriate certifying professional. Students requiring services must self-identify and are strongly encouraged to make an appointment with a DSPS counselor after applying to Delta College and completing the New Student Group Advising (NSGA) session. Students requiring accommodations for NSGA should contact DSPS at least two days in advance.

Disability verification must be submitted for the initial intake appointment to determine reasonable and appropriate accommodations. Students who do not bring disability verification will be rescheduled. Accommodations will not fundamentally alter curriculum or certificate, degree, or transfer requirements. Vocational Rehabilitation Services

The State Department of Rehabilitation (DOR) maintains a liaison counselor through the DSPS office on campus and provides multiple services to qualified students, including a Workability III program. These services include vocational counseling, assessment, job readiness and development and financial aid.

Interested students should contact DSPS for more information and/or for a referral to meet with a DOR Counselor.

Dual Enrollment Program

Without having to travel to the Stockton campus, students from local high schools can enroll in free college courses under the Dual Enrollment Program. Established under AB 288, DEP provides high school students with the opportunity to enroll in community college courses as part of the partnership agreement that Delta College has established with high school districts. Tuition and fees are waived for dual enrollment students, and there are no textbook costs. Dual enrollment students may enroll in up to 15 units per term, and earn both high school credit and college credit at the same time.

DEP aims to improve students’ readiness for transfer to UC/CSU and lead to career pathways. Courses offered range from in-person, hybrid, and fully online courses. Currently, there are 13 partnered school districts and 32 high schools. Courses scheduled under this program fulfill the IGETC general education pattern to transfer.

Early College Pathway Program

Early College Pathways (ECP) is an award-winning premiere program designed to help high school students earn a two-year degree. Participants receive cohort style learning, with a pre-vetted pattern of courses which help students complete their goals while reducing the stress of the college experience. Enrolling and completing college units through the ECP program provides families significant tuition savings.

Program Benefits:

• Students earn a two-year degree

• All courses are free and most books are free or open access
• Semesterly college counseling support is provided
• More than 60 University of California transferable units
• Some districts allow college courses to count for A-G and college credit

English as a Second Language (ESL)

The ESL program is designed to teach students the basic structure of the spoken and written language and prepare them to communicate effectively in English for college or employment. Classes are taught day and evening, and students are placed based on their level of English skills. Tutoring and small group instruction are available to assist students in developing language proficiency.

Equity-Minded Honors Program

The Equity-Minded Honors Program offers academic leadership and service opportunities through deeper exploration of academic topics, learning through self-discovery and independent investigation, and association with a motivated community committed to the continual pursuit of a higher level of scholarship, knowledge, character development, community service, societal improvement, and greater understanding.

Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS)

Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) at Delta College provides a variety of supportive services to enhance academic success for students challenged by income, educational, and/or language barriers. Students participating in EOPS will engage in a series of activities and services designed to strengthen skills necessary to achieve personal and academic success as they complete a certificate, degree, or transfer program. Students must be enrolled full-time (12 units) and meet income and educational criteria. EOPS may admit a small number of students with as few as nine units. Some Disability Support Programs and Services (DSPS) students may be eligible for a unit waiver and should speak with an EOPS staff member.

Cooperative Agencies Resources for Education (CARE)

CARE provides supportive services to Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) students who are at least 18 years of age, single/head of household, with dependent (custodial) children who receive TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) or CalWORKs cash aid. EOPS students must complete a supplemental application and provide income verification for CARE services. EOPS/CARE staff will work closely with the student, campus CalWORKs program, and the Human Services Agency to ensure student needs are met without duplication of services. Please note: all financial services are contingent upon budget availability, EOPS/CARE program compliance and student “unmet need” as determined by the Financial Aid Office.

EOPS Student Success Academy (SSA) is a semester long learning community designed for first-time college students who are EOPS eligible. SSA offers a personalized and educationally supportive learning experience which nurtures the skills, attitudes and behaviors that enhance students’ ability to achieve academic and personal success.

EOPS Summer Readiness Program (SRP)

The EOPS Summer Readiness Program (SRP) is a six-week program designed to assist first-time college students who are EOPS eligible in bridging their high school and college experiences. This learning community offers an extensive orientation to college and teaches students to successfully navigate Delta College. SRP serves students holistically by providing opportunities for academic and personal development while introducing participants to university transfer information. Students must have fewer than 20 college units completed and must meet EOPS program eligibility requirements.

Federal Work Study

Federal Work Study is a financial aid program which provides on-campus part-time employment and an opportunity to earn money needed to attend college. Students apply for Federal Work Study and all other types of financial assistance with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students may apply on the web at https://studentaid.gov/.

International Student Program

Detailed admission information is available online at https://www.deltacollege.edu/academics/international-student-program/international-students-admissions or from the Delta Connect Center located in the DeRicco Student Services Building. A completed International Student Online Application for Admission and required documents must be submitted 12/1-3/1 for the summer intersession, 2/1-6/1 for the fall semester, and 7/1-11/1 for the spring semester. Students should complete admission for their desired term as soon as possible due to visa processing times. Summer admission is not available for ESL students.

Learning Communities

Learning Communities provide opportunities for students to combine related courses and assignments. Belonging to a Learning Community fosters student retention, higher grades, and camaraderie. Learning Communities courses are published on the College website and in the Schedule of Classes.

Math Engineering Science Achievement (MESA) Program

Math Engineering Science Achievement (MESA) is an academic enrichment program that provides support to Delta College students for transfer to a baccalaureate-granting college or university in the areas of Mathematics, Engineering, and Science. Applications are available in the MESA office or through our website.

General Eligibility Criteria: Low income; first generation college students with declared majors in Mathematics, Engineering or Science.

Puente - Bridge to Success

Puente (Spanish for “bridge”) is a national-award-winning program that has helped thousands of students to reach their dreams of college success. The program is open to all students. Emphasis is placed on the General Educational curriculum: history, English, science, language, visual and performing arts, and core discipline requirements. Students will have access to counseling services, orientation, assessment, advising and other education planning. The Puente community seeks to educate our students by attending educational events at universities, cultural events, leadership opportunities and more. An essential component to the success of the Puente Program is the collaboration between students, parents, faculty, and staff of San Joaquin Delta Community College. Puente has expanded to 58 community colleges and 33 high schools throughout California, and tens of thousands of students have been served.

Eligibility Requirements:

• Must be a new or current student
• Maintain a 2.0 GPA and be in good standing with the college

• Make a one-year commitment

Adaptive Learning - Transition to Work

Adaptive Learning - Transition to Work (ALTW), formerly Special Education, courses are non-credit educational assistance classes designed specifically for students with intellectual disabilities to develop living skills in math, reading, health, and community integration. Courses are limited.

Basic Needs Center

The Basic Needs Center serves as a physical and virtual hub to support students in their educational journey to access essential services and resources that include, but are not limited to, food, housing, clothing, financial, and access to wellness and mental health services.

Child Development Center

The Child Development Center (CDC) provides quality State Preschool, early childhood education and childcare services for children of eligible families. Priority is given to eligible Delta College students and staff. The Center provides services to children 18 months through 5 years of age; and follows the academic calendar of the campus.

The Center and office are located off of the Pacific Avenue entrance of the campus and may be contacted by calling (209) 954-5700. Hours of operation are set each semester to meet the needs of the majority of the parents (typically 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday during the fall and spring semesters). Summer session days and hours may vary. A waiting list is maintained for each school year.

The Center, licensed and funded by the State of California for 144 children, provides an environment which encourages the positive growth and development of each child, parent, student, and staff member which are associated with the Center. Activities are designed to meet the social, emotional, physical, and developmental needs of each child who participates, ensuring inclusion and success for all. The Center provides a learning environment for students of Delta College, and other community members.

Delta College serves a diverse population of students. People from various ethnic backgrounds, ages, and cultures attend Delta College for many different reasons. Students are focused on developing career choices along with educational plans to support those choices. Counseling staff assist with academic planning, transfer/career development, and personal counseling issues. Counseling and Special Services increase student access and success by providing new student orientation sessions, education planning and counseling/advising services. General college orientation as well as specialized counseling classes and services are available to assist new and continuing students, international students, those on academic probation, student athletes, AFFIRM program students, Puente program students, Veterans, and English as a Second Language (ESL) students. Delta Connect Center

The purpose of the Delta Connect Center at San Joaquin Delta College is to assist students with the application process for college, financial aid, orientation, counseling, and other support services to help them reach their educational goals. Dreamers Success Center

Empowerment Resource Center

The Empowerment Resource Center at Delta College houses two programs for currently enrolled students:

• The Guardian Scholars Program is for current or former foster youth.
• The Phoenix Project supports students who were formerly incarcerated or in custody.

In addition, the Empowerment Resource Center offers two community programs:

1. Foster & Kinship Care Education (FKCE) Program – for current or prospective resource guardians/families (formerly known as foster parents). We partner with the San Joaquin County Human Services Agency (HSA) to offer required trainings to become an approved resource family for children in out-of-home care. Additionally, we offer a community of support to help families continue offering welcoming and loving homes
2. Youth Empowerment Strategies for Success/Independent Living Program (YESS/ILP) empowers current and former foster youth to successfully transition into self-sufficiency and adulthood. YESS/ILP empowers youth by providing access to campus and community resources and services, and addressing the specific concerns foster youth face on their path to independence. Current and former foster youth 16-21 years of age who are enrolled in San Joaquin County Human Services Agency’s Independent Living Program (ILP) are eligible to attend YESS/ILP classes and receive benefits.

Most college facilities are available for use by students and staff of Delta College for non-instructional purposes. Requests for facility use may also be made by businesses, individuals, and community agencies. Financial Aid

Grants, student loans, scholarships, and work-study jobs are available to qualified Delta College students. All students needing financial assistance while attending Delta College are urged to apply via https://studentaid.gov/. Many scholarships are also available to Delta College students. The scholarship application deadline is March 2 of each year for the following fall and spring semesters. All students are eligible to apply.

Eligibility: Students need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or California DREAM Act (CADDD) to determine financial aid eligibility including grants, student loans, scholarships, and work-study jobs.

Food Services

The Delta College Food Service offers a variety of high-quality foods and beverages in a pleasant atmosphere, with friendly service at reasonable prices. Food Services brews Starbucks’ drinks and offers a great selection of food including pre-made grab and go items and, hot daily specials for breakfast and lunch such as breakfast burritos, biscuits & gravy, chicken alfredo, chicken rice bowls, etc.  Also available are pre-made salads and fresh fruit bowls (in season). Quality nutritional meal kits that are pre-cooked, frozen and microwavable provide keto/low carb, high protein & lower calorie meals. The Java Jitters counter offers espresso, coffee, Frappuccinos, Crème Frappuccinos, refreshers, shaken teas, hot chocolate, iced coffee, and more.

Student Chef

Student Chef is Delta College’s student-run restaurant. Two Culinary Arts classes operate the restaurant, handling both the restaurant operations and kitchen management. Student Chef operates eight weeks during fall and spring semester, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, for dine-In and to-go orders, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The menu typically includes main dishes, sandwiches, salads, starters, sweets, and beverages. The menu changes weekly and is posted on our website https://deltacollege.edu/academics/academic-divisions/arts-and-communication-division/culinary-arts-program/student-chef. Menu items range in price from $4.00 to $15.00.

San Joaquin Delta College Goleman Library has a collection of more than 80,000 volumes and provides a variety of learning resources to students, including both in-person and virtual reference assistance, instruction, a periodical collection, reserve books, textbooks, media materials, and photo-copying equipment. The library has a variety of electronic online databases and video tutorials. Additionally, the Goleman Library offers students access to computer workstations and the internet.

Mobility/Health Services

Disability Support Programs and Services (DSPS) provides limited assistance to students with a verified mobility impairment (based on individual functional limitations) who requires help navigating the campus for academic purposes. Students must meet with a DSPS counselor to request services and provide medical documentation of their disability. Appointments are scheduled two weeks in advance. Mobility/Health Services also provides limited first aid to any individual who becomes ill or injured while on campus. If you need first aid, go immediately to the Mobility/Health Services Office located in Danner Hall, Room 101, or contact Campus Police at (209) 954-5000 or by using a Blue Emergency Phone located on campus.

San Joaquin Delta College police officers are sworn peace officers of the State of California and are vested with full law enforcement powers and responsibilities. They meet the selection and training requirements set forth by the Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training under State of California Penal Code Section 13510(a). In addition, the Police Department is staffed by non-sworn POST certified dispatchers, campus safety officers, and student officers.

Crime Prevention and Crime Reporting

Crime Prevention

Crime Prevention is student and employee awareness of their environment and a true collaboration between law enforcement and the public. It is the willingness to look out for one another and to report suspicious activities immediately to the San Joaquin Delta College Police Department. Students and employees must be aware of their surroundings and develop a perception of what seems out of place, or out of the ordinary. Do not take chances. What may appear harmless could be serious. Fortunately, the right attitude, actions and awareness can help protect you and your belongings.

Crime Reporting

The San Joaquin Delta College Police Department prides itself on being community oriented in its crime prevention strategies. The most beneficial way of preventing crime is through the tips and watchful eye of an informed public. The following is how to report a crime on campus:

1. Initiate a text conversation with the Police Department through the Rave Mobile Guardian app.
2. Call the Police Department by using an Emergency Blue Phone or any campus phone and dial 911 or 5000, or call (209) 954-5000 by cellular phone or off campus phone.
3. Provide the dispatcher with what, where, and when it happened.
4. Provide the dispatcher with suspect information and description.
5. Advise if a weapon was used or displayed.
6. Location of the suspect or direction of flight.
7. Advise if the suspect drove a car or bicycle or was on foot.
8. Advise if there are any injuries.
9. Stay on the phone until the dispatcher ends the call.

It is extremely important that you give the dispatcher as much information as possible. The dispatcher relays all of your information to the police officers who are “out in the field” responding to your call. It is imperative for the safety of the officers that you put as much detail into your report as possible, so they know exactly what they are responding to. Your assistance is always appreciated. The information that you provide assists in keeping San Joaquin Delta College a beautiful and safe environment for all.

Education

One of the essential ingredients of any successful crime prevention program is an informed public. It is the intent of San Joaquin Delta College Police Department to inform students and staff, in a timely manner, of any criminal activity or security problems which may pose a reasonable threat to their physical safety. Such information will regularly be published and distributed to students, faculty, and staff through several campus publications, in house memos or through the Mustang Alert! system. Another critical element of a campus safety program is education. The Police Department, in conjunction with the Student Activities Office and the Department of Counseling, sponsor programs of various topics. The Police Department’s crime prevention officer is available to speak at public events regarding crime prevention, or other topics as requested.

Safety Presentations

The San Joaquin Delta College Police Department provides informative safety presentations to all members of the Delta College community. The presentations range in time from 30 minutes to 80 minutes and can be modified to address a specific topic. Some of the most popular presentations we have done are “Surviving an Active Shooter Event”, “Police Department Services”, “Crime Prevention and Awareness”, and “Identity Theft”. Presentations are conducted year-round upon request.

Victims of Crime

Students who are victims of a crime, or witness a crime being committed should contact the San Joaquin Delta College Police Department as soon as possible. Time is essential when a crime has been committed or suspicious activity is occurring. The sooner the police are notified, the quicker the response will be. Persons who believe that a crime may be occurring, or who are suspicious that something may be wrong, should contact the Police Department immediately at (209) 954-5000 (Voice/TDD). The Police Department would rather respond to an innocent situation than be notified after an actual crime has been committed. Always be on the safe side and call.

Emergency Notifications

The San Joaquin Delta College Police Department utilizes Mustang Alert! powered by Rave Mobile Safety, to provide students, staff, faculty, and visitors with Clery Timely Warnings and emergency notifications. Mustang Alert! utilizes text messaging, email, social media, loudspeaker, and the Rave Mobile Guardian app to convey crucial safety messaging. At the beginning of each semester, and during fire drills, Mustang Alert! is tested to ensure functionality.

Lost and Found

Several hundred items of found property are turned in to the Police Department each year, most of which are never claimed by their rightful owners. Property that is marked with a name, address, Delta ID number, phone number, or driver’s license number can be returned to the owner if found and turned in to the Police Department. Owners of property with no identification should check with the Police Department in case it has been found.

Found property that is not claimed within ninety days will be disposed of by the Police Department in accordance with the law.

The Police Department is located on the north side of campus, across the street from the Shima 1 parking lot at the corner of District and Service Roads in the Lourn Phelps Police Services Building. Any person who loses property should check with the Police Department to see if it has been recovered. Found property will be released to owners by appointment only. Pride Center

The Pride Center supports lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning students through our three values of service, community, and social justice. We provide direct student support, connect students to important resources, and advocate and work to improve the campus climate for all LGBTQ+ individuals.

Veterans Resource Center

The Leo P. Burke Veterans Resource Center (VRC) provides student military affiliates (veterans, service members, and dependents) a lounge, quiet study area, computer lab, food pantry, peer-to-peer advising (Peer Advisors for Veteran Education (PAVE)), meetings with Veterans Affairs (VA) representatives, and various workshops. Veterans of the armed forces as well as qualifying dependents, reservists, and service members in approved training programs may qualify for a variety of benefits including veterans educational benefits, state fee waivers, and financial aid.

The VRC provides informational materials, advice on available educational benefits, and guidance on the special satisfactory academic progress requirements for students using educational benefits. Students wishing to apply for veterans educational benefits must apply directly through the VRC by emailing, calling, or visiting during office hours. Any student that submits a VRC Intake Form, VRC Student Contract, VRC Certification Form as well as a “Certificate of Eligibility (COE)”, “NOBE”, “TA Agreement”, and/or “San Joaquin County Authorization Form” will be able to attend or participate in courses while awaiting payment from the VA, Department of Defense, or a fee waiver from the State of California.

Satisfactory Progress Standards for Title 38 Students 

Federal regulations state that educational benefit payments must be discontinued when the student ceases to make satisfactory progress toward the completion of his or her stated goal. San Joaquin Delta College is required to report a termination of benefits if, after three semesters of college: 

• The student has failed to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0;
• The student has failed to complete at least 50% of units each semester; or
• A combination of the above. 

Upon termination of benefits, the student must complete at least one term without benefits in which the following conditions are met: 

• The student completes at least 50% of units attempted;
• The semester grade point average is at least 2.00. 

Students whose educational benefits have been terminated by the College can receive benefits on a probationary status when they return. However, those students must: 

• Reapply for admission to the college prior to contacting the Veterans’ Services Office;
• Show progress during that probationary semester by completing at least 50% of units and improving the cumulative grade point average (if previously below a 2.0). 

Previously terminated students will continue to receive benefits as long as they continue to show improvement by completing a minimum of 50% of units attempted each term and the semester grade point average continues to be at least 2.00. VA policy is more restrictive than college policy and may result in benefits being terminated for students who are still eligible to enroll at the college. If you have any questions about the satisfactory progress policy, please contact the Veterans Resource Center.

VA Pending Payment Compliance

In accordance with Title 38 US Code 3679 subsection (e), the College adopts the following additional provisions for any students using U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Post 9/11 G.I. Bill® (Ch. 33) or Vocational Rehabilitation & Employment (Ch. 31) benefits, while payment to the institution is pending from the VA. This college will not:

• Prevent the student’s enrollment
• Assess a late penalty fee to the student
• Require the student to secure alternative or additional funding
• Deny the student access to any resources (access to classes, libraries, or other institutional facilities) available to other students who have satisfied their tuition and fee bills to the institution.

However, to qualify for this provision, such students may be required to:

• Produce the VA Certificate of Eligibility (COE) by the first day of class
• Provide a written request to be certified
• Provide additional information needed to properly certify the enrollment as described in other institutional policies

Statement of Absence Due to Military Service

California Education Code 99130 states the following: 

(a) Subject to applicable federal, state, and institutional refund and withdrawal policies, when a student is called to active military duty during an academic term, the student may choose one of the following options:  

The student may withdraw from the institution, retroactively to the beginning of the academic term, with a full refund of tuition and fees in accordance with Section 824 of the Military and Veterans Code.  

If at least 75 percent of the academic term has been completed, the student may request that the faculty member assign a grade for the course based on the work the student has completed. The faculty member shall make the final decision as to whether to grant the student’s request.  

If the faculty member assigns a grade of “incomplete” for the student’s coursework, the student shall have a minimum of four weeks after returning to the institution to complete the course requirements. Additional time may be granted if alternative arrangements are made with the faculty member and provided that the alternative arrangements are consistent with the requirements of Section 824 of the Military and Veterans Code. An institution shall also comply with the requirements of Section 668.18 of Title 34 of the Code of Federal Regulations, or a successor provision, regarding the procedures and timelines for the readmission of a military student.

California Education Code 66023 states the following:  

(a) Students called to active military service: 

Do not lose academic credits or degree status;

Provide for a refund of fees paid by the student for the term in which he or she was called to active military service.

The Music Lab/Library maintains a collection of audio recordings, musical scores and interactive computer software designed to meet the academic needs of each student enrolled in music courses. In addition, there are music listening stations and computer workstations with midi keyboards, as well as individual practice rooms available for students enrolled in music courses.

Delta Engineering/Engineering Technology Day

This annual event is hosted by the San Joaquin Delta College Department of Engineering. The day includes drafting competitions for beginning and advanced students. Additionally, students are invited to participate in an engineering design competition or a robotics competition. The event includes a career orientation session. Awards are presented to students in a variety of categories. Participating students must attend high school in the Delta College service area.

The Delta College SkillsUSA Club offers regional, state, and national competition for Career and Technical Education (CTE) students. Students compete in CTE areas such as diesel equipment mechanics, drafting, air conditioning, machining, automotive mechanics, electrical, welding, and many others. Students must be enrolled in a course relating to the area in which they plan to compete. They must also join SkillsUSA at the national and state levels.

Journalism and Mass Communications

Mass Communication students learn all aspects of the rapidly changing field of digital media, while retaining traditional values of objective, fair, and balanced reporting as well as opinion writing across a wide variety of media platforms. Classes are appropriate for any student wishing to improve his or her abilities to communicate with a mass audience. Ethical and legal standards are examined and emphasized. Majors in the field participate in preparing news stories for transmission on a variety of media platforms. Majors also participate in regional and state conferences of the Journalism Association of Community Colleges, the largest organization of its kind in the United States.

Livestock Judging Team

The San Joaquin Delta College Livestock Judging Team is nationally competitive and highly respected. Team members regularly receive university scholarships and employment opportunities. They learn livestock selection principles that are relevant to breeding and market animal selection as well as communication and decision-making skills that contribute to their educational and social development. The Livestock Judging Team attends numerous state and national competitions each year, and gains valuable insight, knowledge, and networking opportunities in the livestock industry while traveling as a team to practice and compete.

The San Joaquin Delta College Livestock Show Team is designed to enhance animal husbandry skills associated with the marketing of livestock. Delta College students learn to select, feed, fit/groom and present beef cattle, meat goats, sheep, and swine in a competitive market through hands-on experiences at the Delta College Farm in Manteca. Students travel and participate in livestock shows and expositions in California including the Big Fresno Fair and the Porterville Collegiate Livestock Shows. Students are also engaged in volunteering at shows in the local area. Through this class, team members gain valuable experience to develop skills needed in an educational and commercial environment.

Speech and Debate Team

The Speech and Debate Program gives students an opportunity to develop their skills in public speaking, interpreting literature or plays, and formal individual debate and team debate. Students will compete in supervised intercollegiate speech and debate tournaments throughout California and the nation. This award-winning program is available to novice or experienced students. Moreover, students develop a sense of team spirit and pride as they represent Delta College throughout the United States. 

Artifact Nouveau

Artifact Nouveau is a magazine of works by students, faculty, alumni, and employees of San Joaquin Delta College published by the SJDC Writers’ Guild. Works by writers and artists unaffiliated with Delta College may be selected for publication for up to 40% of the overall content. Literary and visual art submissions are accepted year-round. All genres and mediums are welcome.

Stockton’s Delta Center for the Arts at San Joaquin Delta College is a focal point for the Arts in the San Joaquin Valley.

The center includes:

• Fully equipped production facilities, including a costume shop, scene shop with paint frame, chorus and ‘star’ dressing rooms, makeup room, and box office.

The Warren Atherton Auditorium has 1,428-seats with a 60-foot proscenium. The Tillie Lewis Theater seats 393 and features a 40-foot proscenium. Both spaces are equipped with hydraulic pit lifts and fly systems. The Muller Studio Theater is a black box space seating up to 110, with a fixed grid. All three theaters are equipped with modern lighting, sound, and projection systems.

The 2,000 square-foot L.H. Horton Jr. Gallery schedules art exhibits and juried shows throughout the year. Exhibits feature established and emerging artists from throughout the region and around the world.

With over 60,000 guests annually, the Delta Center for the Arts is a hub of activity for the campus and community. Students at San Joaquin Delta College perform regularly on its stages in recitals, concerts and plays. Ensembles from the Departments of Music and Dance produce a variety of events including jazz concerts, band concerts, choral concerts, and dance recitals. The Department of Drama produces a series of shows that appeal to a variety of audiences, including musicals, plays and theater for youth and families.

In addition to supporting the College’s academic programs, the Delta Center for the Arts has played host to numerous internationally acclaimed artists, cultural figures, and world leaders, including Margaret Thatcher and Shimon Perez, Secretary of State Colin Powell, and General Norman Schwarzkopf. Musical performers representing all genres have appeared here, including the Yellow Jackets, Poncho Sanchez, Kenny Werner, the Big Phat Band and Kurt Elling, just to name a few. Both the Stockton Symphony and Lodi Musical Theatre Company perform their full seasons here.

Bicycle Lockers

Bicycle lockers for students and staff are available through the Student Activities Office, Shima Building, Room 101C. Bike lockers are available each spring/fall semester and summer intercession. Students must complete an application and pay a NON-REFUNDABLE key deposit fee of $5.00 to gain access to the locker of their choice. There are 14 bicycle lockers located on campus in the Shima and Budd areas.

Students can pay the $5.00 fee at the Cashiers Office located in the Horton Administration building on the first floor. Please bring your receipt, a copy of your class schedule, and photo ID to register for a bike locker.

All lockers are provided on a first come, first served basis.

The Delta College Bookstore is owned and operated by the San Joaquin Delta Community College District. In addition to textbooks and required supplies, the Bookstore has a large selection of apparel, hats, logo merchandise, lab supplies, art supplies, electronics, school supplies, and food and beverages. You may shop the Bookstore in person during our regular business hours, or on our web page bookstore.deltacollege.edu/Home at your convenience. We will ship to your home, or you have the option to pick up your order in the store.

Book Buy-Back

The Bookstore’s commitment to students is to buy back as many books at the end of each semester as can potentially be resold the following term, usually over 80% of book titles.

Students may sell back books any time, but the best price is offered during the last week of the term for those books that are needed the next immediate semester. Books sold back at ANY OTHER TIME will be bought back for a used book dealer and only at the “wholesale” prices listed in the dealer’s catalog.

• During the last week of each semester, the Bookstore will pay up to 50% of the purchase price on all copies NEEDED on campus for the following semester - regardless of where purchased.
• Books bought back are then re-priced, USED and made available for the next semester at 75% of the current new price.
• Discontinued books may still have a “wholesale” value if the edition is current. The Bookstore buys these books for a USED BOOK company that resells them to other schools. “Wholesale” values are approximately 25% of the original new price.

The Bookstore may not buy back certain titles for the following reasons:

• Faculty change text for the following term;
• Publisher changes editions of text; or
• The Bookstore may be overstocked on a particular title.

Book Refunds/Exchanges

• First week of each semester (fall and spring): Full refund according to policy.
• Second week of each semester (fall and spring): Refund only with proof of dropped class and according to policy.
• Summer session: First week only and according to policy.
• Late starting six-week classes: Return books within two days of start date. No refunds on classes less than six weeks.
• Cancelled classes: Return books within five business days from the cancel date.

To receive a refund, a student must provide:

• Cash register receipt; and
• Class schedule; and
• Valid identification.

To receive a full refund, the new books must be in perfect condition. Otherwise, returns are subject to a 25% reduction. The Bookstore reserves the right to make a determination on the condition of books. Workbooks, study guides, syllabi, etc., are only eligible for refunds if returned new and unused. Online bundles with software and access codes are not refundable. There is no refund on supplies, non-required books, plays, software, or electronics.

Publisher Access Codes and eBooks

eBooks and publisher access codes are refundable within 14 days of purchase. Additionally, the Bookstore cannot fulfill refund requests if more than 10% of the product has been viewed and/or if any page(s) of the product has been printed.

Textbook Rentals

The Bookstore offers textbook rentals.

Students must:

• Be at least 18 years of age
• Possess a valid credit card that does not expire prior to the end of the current semester
• Possess a valid Delta ID number
• Complete the “textbook Rental Agreement” at the store or register online and pick up the order the next business day (during regular business hours) or have it shipped to their home

Textbooks that are available for rent will be noted in the price section of the bookstore website and on the shelf tag in the bookstore.

Failure to Return Rentals:

• If students fail to return the rented materials by the due date (see Bookstore’s website for details) or return them in an unsalable condition, students will be charged the replacement fee to their credit card on file. The replacement fee is the retail price of a used textbook.

The Delta College Bookstore is not responsible for reminding students of the rental return due date. Returns will not be accepted after the rental return due date. After the replacement fee is paid, the book belongs to the student. The replacement fee is in addition to the original rental fee.

Damaged Rental:

• If a rented textbook is deemed too damaged for re-rental (e.g., water damage, missing pages, excessive highlighting, underlining, or marking, etc.), students will be charged the Full Replacement Fee plus applicable sales tax.

Responsibility:

• Students are responsible if a rental book is not returned by the appropriate time or is not in re-rental condition.

Students are strongly encouraged to bring their class schedules to the Bookstore and shop early for the best selection of lower-priced used books. The Bookstore accepts VISA, MasterCard, Discover Card, American Express, and debit cards as well as Apple Pay and Samsung Pay. THE BOOKSTORE DOES NOT ACCEPT CHECKS.

The Bookstore also has food items available when Food Services is closed. That includes grab-and-go food items such as sandwiches, wraps, tuna salad, pesto pasta, and microwavable food items such as noodles (yakisoba/chow mein/ramen), burritos, hot pockets and mac & cheese. Delta Winds

Delta Winds is an annual publication of student essays from courses in the English program of San Joaquin Delta College. The collection of expository writings includes reflective personal narratives and analytical social commentaries. Essays from the magazine have been republished in English composition textbooks by Bedford/St. Martin’s Press, Roxbury Press, Thomson Press, Longman Publishing, Norton and Company, and Holt, Rinehart, and Winston.

Occupational Work Experience Program

The Occupational Work Experience (OWE) Program is designed for students enrolled in a course related to their specific job duties while working at a business, industry, or government work site. These duties may be completed as a paid employee or a non-paid volunteer. The OWE Program provides students an opportunity to develop marketable skills, abilities, attitudes, and work habits appropriate to successful employment in a career field. Students acquire sufficient career knowledge to enable them to develop an occupational education plan consistent with their career goals. Students enrolled in the OWE Program may earn one to four (1-4) units of general elective college credit per semester. Students may earn a total of 16 units from the program. Once the student has reached the 16-unit limit, the student is no longer eligible for the program.

Eligibility: Students must be enrolled in a Delta College course or courses and be working as a paid employee or non-paid volunteer at a business, industry, or government work site. This course must be in a discipline related to the work experience and may be taken concurrently or may have been taken in the semester immediately prior. Job duties at the work site must be related to at least one of the Program Areas (disciplines) listed on the Occupational Work Experience web site: www.deltacollege.edu/occupational-work-experience-owe-program.

The Stockton Institute for Continued Learning (SICL) is a member-run learning-in-retirement program for mature adults that holds classes on the Delta College campus and also conducts off-campus tours each semester. Membership is open to all older adults in the Delta College region. This is a membership-run organization that welcomes and encourages active participation of all involved.

Online Learning

San Joaquin Delta College offers a number of courses and programs online via the Internet, using Canvas. Numerous online course sections are scheduled each fall and spring semester, and during the summer term. Students access these courses from their own computer, and in most cases, on-campus attendance is not required. Online courses offer an attractive option to those who work full-time, have children to care for during the day, or who live too far from campus to conveniently commute. This option also appeals to those who simply like the online learning environment.

Courses that replace some in-class time with online work are termed hybrid. Fully online courses (those that do not have any on-campus meetings) are referred to as online. The Schedule of Classes will show “Int Lec” for fully online classes. It will display two lines for hybrid classes:

Advanced computer skills are not required to enroll in these courses, but students should be familiar with basic operations such as email, copy-and-paste, uploading files (for assignment submission,) using a word processor, and navigating the Internet using a Web browser such as Google Chrome or Firefox.

Delta College promotes and ensures academic honesty in online courses in several ways. Courses are held in password protected online environments that provide the instructor and students with tools to share information, collaborate, discuss, and evaluate learning. Tools such as Turnitin.com are used to teach online students to value and practice academic honesty. In some online classes, instructors may require that students use Lockdown Browser for taking tests in Canvas. Lockdown Browser is a secure browser that prevents students from printing, copying, going to another URL, or accessing other applications during a test. Some instructors may also require the use of a webcam to record the online testing session.

South Campus at Mountain House

The South Campus at Mountain House offers a comprehensive catalog of day and evening courses and specialized certificate programs for job training and advancement.
