BUS 8H Honors Introduction to Law and Society

Units: 3
Hours: 54 hours LEC
Grade Options: Letter Grade
General Education: Delta Area 5; CSU Area D
This introductory level honors course provides an explanation of different sources of law, including statutes, court cases and administrative agency rules, and it reviews schools of jurisprudence, basic legal reasoning, canons of statutory interpretation, argumentation, and introductory socio-legal theory with perspectives and research methods of the social and behavioral sciences. Additionally, the course introduces an overview of various classifications of law and legal systems in global society, including such classifications as civil law and common law, as well as selected legal specialties and landmark cases in areas such as civil rights law, constitutional law, business law, criminal law, antitrust law, environmental and land use law, family law, real property law, contract law, employment and labor law, immigration law, intellectual property law, and other areas of law in society. Also included is a review of the principles and theories of legal ethics, social justice, critical legal studies, and law in action. Material is presented from a theoretical point of view and focuses on core concepts and methods of the socio-legal studies discipline rather than on personal, practical, or applied aspects of a particular jurisdiction. This course is an honors level introduction to law and society, including encouraging application of course knowledge to real-world problems/situations. This course is not intended to replace BUS 18A, 18B (Business Law), or BUS 19 (Legal Environment of Business) for business majors or minors. Since BUS 8H and BUS 8 are equivalent courses, credit may be awarded for either BUS 8H or BUS 8 but not both. (UC, CSU)
