Advanced ESL Certificate of Competency

The Advanced ESL Certificate of Competency prepares students to excel in advanced-level ESL coursework, positioning them for success in vocational training, academic programs, or professional environments where a high level of English proficiency is essential. In this program, English language learners will focus on mastering academic reading, writing, listening, speaking, and grammar skills at an advanced college ESL level. These skills will enable them to transition seamlessly into higher education, degrees, certificates, and transfer opportunities. Participants will also refine their English proficiency to enhance employability, enrich their families, and contribute more actively to the wider community.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

1. Write an essay utilizing advanced structures of English and demonstrating critical thinking while responding to the prompt with organization, development, and support.
2. Read an article or essay and identify the author’s main opinion and supporting reasons and evidence.
3. Write a short composition utilizing advanced structures of English grammar and demonstrating mastery of advanced sentence structure and variety, complex verb tenses, and mechanics of writing.
4. Read a text with grammar errors (eg. sentence structure, punctuation, run-on sentences, etc.) to identify and correct them.
5. Demonstrate clear pronunciation and adequate speed of speech appropriate to the advanced level of English fluency.
6. Answer comprehension questions and paraphrase the main ideas and supporting details after listening to a recording.
