High-Intermediate ESL Certificate of Competency

The High-Intermediate ESL Certificate of Competency prepares students to progress to advanced ESL coursework, allowing them to pursue vocational training, academic programs, or employment opportunities that require strong English proficiency. In this program, English language learners will focus on enhancing their academic reading, writing, listening, speaking, and grammar skills at a high-intermediate college ESL level. These skills will support their transition to advanced ESL coursework, degrees, certificates, and/or transfer opportunities. Participants will also strengthen the English skills needed to boost their employability, enrich their families, and engage more fully in the broader community.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

1. Write a short essay utilizing high-intermediate structures of English and demonstrating comprehension while responding to the prompt with organization, development, and support.
2. Read a short article or essay and identify the author’s main opinion and supporting reasons and evidence. Answer comprehension questions about specific details, main ideas, and vocabulary in context.
3. Write a paragraph or short composition utilizing high-intermediate structures of English grammar and demonstrating mastery of intermediate sentence structure, verb tenses, and mechanics of writing.
4. Read a paragraph or short text with grammar errors (eg. subject-verb agreement, complex verb tenses, fragments, etc.) to identify and correct them.
5. Answer comprehension questions and restate the main ideas after listening to a recording.
6. Demonstrate clear pronunciation and adequate speed of speech appropriate to the high-intermediate level of English fluency through speeches and presentations.
