Upon successful completion of the American Sign Language (ASL) Associate in Arts degree, the student will demonstrate language fluency, as well as cultural knowledge of ASL and the Deaf. The program satisfies the majority of lower division transfer course work by establishing ASL fluency for students planning to transfer to an ASL interpreting, Deaf Education or Deaf Studies program. It is highly recommended that students see a Counselor or ASSIST.org for information regarding transfer requirements for this major at specific universities.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

Demonstrate clear and precise expressive and receptive skills in American Sign Language with appropriate grammatical accuracy.
Demonstrate appropriate cultural awareness.

Complete 22 units

COMM DIS 1A Introduction to Communication Disorders Units: 3
COMM DIS 1B Speech, Language and Hearing Development Units: 3
SL 1 Elementary American Sign Language I Units: 4
SL 2 Elementary American Sign Language II Units: 4
SL 3 Intermediate American Sign Language I Units: 4
SL 4 Intermediate American Sign Language II Units: 4

Major Requirements - Restricted Electives

Complete 2 units selected from:

SL 31 Elementary American Sign Language Laboratory I Units: 0.5-1
SL 32 Elementary American Sign Language Laboratory II Units: 0.5-1
SL 33 Intermediate American Sign Language Laboratory III Units: 0.5-1
SL 34 Intermediate American Sign Language Laboratory IV Units: 0.5-1

Minimum Major Units Required: 24

Complete all courses with a grade of “C” or better.

General Education

Complete one of the following general education patterns:

Students are advised to double-count courses in the major or area of emphasis to also satisfy general education when possible. Course subject credit will be awarded in satisfaction of both major/area of emphasis and lower division general education requirements, but the units will only be counted once in computing the total number of units for the degree.
