The Low-Intermediate ESL Certificate of Competency prepares students to advance to higher-level ESL coursework in order to transition to vocational training, academic programs, or employment opportunities where English proficiency is required. In this program, English language learners will focus on academic reading, writing, listening, speaking, and grammar skills at a low-intermediate college ESL level. Students will use these skills to transition to high-intermediate college ESL course work on their pathways to degrees, certificates, and/or transfer opportunities. English language learners in this program will strengthen the English language skills needed to improve their employability, enrich their families, and become more active participants in the wider community.
Program Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

Write a paragraph utilizing low-intermediate structures of English and demonstrating comprehension while responding to the prompt with organization, development, and support.
- Read a text and locate information in response to comprehension questions about main ideas and details.
- Write a paragraph utilizing low-intermediate structures of English grammar and demonstrating mastery of simple sentence structure and verb tenses.
- Read a paragraph with grammar errors (e.g. subject-verb agreement, verb tense, etc.) to identify and correct them.
- Answer comprehension questions after listening to a brief, simple recording.
- Demonstrate clear pronunciation and adequate speed of speech appropriate to the low-intermediate level of English fluency by giving short presentations and answering questions orally.
