The Associate in Arts for Transfer degree in Spanish provides a sequential course of studies that will give students a greater understanding of the Spanish language and Spanish cultures/area studies. The program will promote language acquisition in a cultural context. Emphasis will be placed in the acquisition and development of communication skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and the promotion of cultural understanding (behaviors, institutions, perspectives and artistic manifestations.) This program is designed as a seamless pathway for students planning to transfer to a California State University (CSU) with a major in Spanish, and for students who are interested in acquiring linguistic and cultural competency in Spanish.
Program Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate proficient oral expression in the Spanish language with appropriate grammatical accuracy, cultural awareness and a clear understanding of linguistic structures.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the cultural diversity of Spanish speakers (including behaviors, institutions, historical perspectives and artistic manifestations).
- Demonstrate proficient written expression in Spanish language with appropriate grammatical accuracy, cultural awareness and a clear understanding of linguistic structures.

Minimum Major Units Required: 23
Complete all courses with a grade of “C” or better. If a student places out of any core course(s) and is not awarded units for that course, the student will need to complete additional units from Restricted Electives to compensate for the course/units required to reach at least 23 total units in the major.
General Education
Complete one of the following general education patterns:
Students are advised to double-count courses in the major or area of emphasis to also satisfy general education when possible. Course subject credit will be awarded in satisfaction of both major/area of emphasis and lower division general education requirements, but the units will only be counted once in computing the total number of units for the degree.
